E-tailers are set for a bumper Christmas as fresh data reveals Australians will spend more than $1.5 billion online this holiday season.
Data from online payments gateway, eWAY, has revealed Australians are increasingly shunning busy department stores and doing their shopping online.
eWAY processes one in four of every dollars spent online in Australia.
In December 2009, the company processed $94 million worth of online transactions through its merchants alone.
In December 2010, this figure almost doubled to $151 million.
The significant upwards trend continued for December trading continued in 2011 ($216 million), 2012 ($272 million) and 2013 ($319 million).
Following those trends, eWAY is expecting to process about $400 million through its 17,000 online merchants in December this year.
eWAY chief executive and founder, Matt Bullock, said online shopping was on the rise this year as a result of the drop in the dollar.
“Because of this, more Aussies are choosing to shop with local online retailers rather than overseas stores,” he said.
“Coupled with the convenience of home delivery, easy price comparison and the wide variety online, it’s easy to see why online is an attractive option.
“We’re getting to the pointy end of the Christmas shopping season where the delivery deadline for overseas stores closes soon as well, so this is when local online retailers will really begin to see things heating up.”
