If you happened to be around Brisbane last week, you may have seen eWAY shirts walking the streets armed with garbage bags and trash-pickers.

The initiative is part of our corporate responsibility programme to offer a Day of Service back to the community. This year’s service was to clean up the local neighbourhood around our Brisbane office. Working with the Brisbane City Council Waste and Resource Recovery Services Branch Litter Prevention, 85 employees across Global Payments, Ezidebit, eWAY, Storman and our friends of the business World’s Biggest Garage Sale, took part and did their bit picking up rubbish and cleaning the streets. At the end of the day, we collected over 3.5 standard bins full of trash!

For the run-down of the day, check out our event video:

A big thank you to Ellen and her colleague Paul Cusack from Brisbane City Council Waste and Resource Recovery Services Branch Litter Prevention who provided us with the tools and guided experience to make sure the day went smoothly.

We didn’t stop there however, with our other offices doing their bit too!
Across the ocean in New Zealand, the team worked with Eat My Lunch, an amazing charity that works with schools to provide lunches for kids in poverty who go to school without lunch every day. The team of three managed to deliver 467 lunches to 13 schools around Auckland.

In Sydney, the team worked with OzHarvest, doing a food drive which helped collect quality excess food from commercial outlets and deliver it directly to more than 1,300 charities, supporting people in need across the country.

In Canberra, the team joined the clean-up spirit with their own guided clean up event, partnering with Clean Up Australia. Canberra managed to collect 4 full bags of rubbish and 3 recycling bags, with only 27 people. Good effort guys!

More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year*. If you picked up 2 pieces of rubbish a week on your daily walks to and from work, in a year you would pick up 104 pieces of rubbish a year! If we all did our bit, the world would be a much cleaner place. If eWAY has inspired anybody during these events, we consider it a success.

We are committed to our social responsibility programmes which are spearheaded by our employees. We give back to the community because we can and are always on the lookout for new initiatives.
